THE proposed adjustment to natural gas prices for non-energy manufacturers has ignited debate over the role of energy policy in supporting employment and the country’s export competitiveness.
Economist Dr Jamelia Harris acknowledged yesterday that the arrangement whereby non-energy manufacturers are given a subsidised price for natural gas was introduced to improve competitiveness and protect employment in light manufacturing.
In a WhatsApp response to the Express, she questioned, “Is the Government satisfied that these objectives have been met or are these objectives no longer relevant?”
