THE Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was passed in the Senate on Tuesday, with 23 senators voting in favour, six against and one abstention, as eight Independent senators supported the legislation to establish Chaguanas as a city and create four new boroughs.
All six Opposition senators voted against while Independent Senator Francis Lewis abstained.
In her winding-up, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen defended the proposed restructuring, arguing that it would address disparities in representation and improve service delivery across municipal corporations.
