THE High Court has ruled that Justices of the Peace (JPs) retain the authority to grant bail for indictable offences.
The ruling by Justice Carol Gobin on October 15, strikes down a government policy that had stripped JPs of the power to grant bail in a police station.
In her ruling, Justice Gobin declared that Section 10 of the Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) Act, 2011 (AJIPA) did not remove JPs’ long-standing jurisdiction to grant station bail.
