Head of CorÂpoÂrate and RegÂuÂlaÂtoÂry AfÂfairs (COÂRA) Caribbean at the West InÂdiÂan ToÂbacÂco Co Ltd (WitÂco), GerÂvon AbraÂham, has raised conÂcerns over GovÂernÂmentâs reÂcent exÂcise inÂcreasÂes, warnÂing that loÂcal manÂuÂfacÂturÂers could be disÂadÂvanÂtaged if imÂport duÂties are not adÂjustÂed acÂcordÂingÂly.
DurÂing MonÂdayâs BudÂget preÂsenÂtaÂtion, FiÂnance MinÂisÂter Dave TanÂcoo anÂnounced steep cusÂtoms duÂty hikes on alÂcoÂhol and toÂbacÂco prodÂucts, which he said are exÂpectÂed to acÂcount for 80 per cent of proÂjectÂed revÂenue growth in the comÂing fisÂcal year.
UnÂder the new rates, duÂties on rum and spirÂits will rise from $79.25 to $158.50 per cent of alÂcoÂhol conÂtent; beer from $5.14 to $10.28 by gravÂiÂty; and cigÂaÂrettes from $5.26 to $10.52 per pack of 20. These inÂcreasÂes take imÂmeÂdiÂate efÂfect.
