Finance Minister Colm Imbert expects that four state-of-the-art mobile scanners costing US$12.9 million (TT$87.5 million) will help crack down on illegal weapons and drugs smuggled into the country through the Port of Spain and Point Lisas ports.
He spoke at the commissioning ceremony for two of the scanners yesterday at the Port of Spain Port where a live demonstration was conducted to show the technology used in scanning containers.
In his address, Imbert said the acquisition of four Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) mobile scanners was aimed at significantly enhancing the nation’s ability to combat smuggling and improve port security.
