Grounding is much more than walking barefoot on the earth. It is the process of becoming stable, balanced, and connected in every aspect of life. True grounding happens on three levels — physical, mental, and spiritual — and each level supports the others. Our physical body is made from the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and ether (space). The more we stay connected with these elements, the more balanced and energised our body becomes. Spending time in nature, walking on the grass or soil, feeling the warmth of sunlight, breathing fresh air, drinking pure water, eating wholesome food, getting enough rest, and keeping the body active all help the body return to its natural rhythm and live in harmony with nature. When the body is steady and relaxed, it becomes easier for the mind and spirit to find balance as well.GROUNDING THE MINDThe mind acts as a bridge between the physical world and the inner spiritual world. In its original state, the mind is peaceful, clear, and naturally undivided. However, constant thinking, worries, distractions, and emotional reactions pull it away from this balance. A restless mind feels scattered and exhausted, while a grounded mind feels calm and centred.Simple daily practices can gently bring the mind back to its natural state. Gratitude, positive affirmations, journalling, mindful breathing, constructive self-talk, serving others, and keeping uplifting company all help reduce mental noise. Taking short pauses during the day to observe our thoughts without judging them creates inner space. Even a few moments of silence each day allow the mind to settle. As unnecessary thoughts decrease, clarity, emotional stability, and inner strength naturally grow. A grounded mind is not free from challenges, but it remains steady in the middle of them.SPIRITUAL GROUNDINGSpiritual grounding has been misunderstood with mental grounding. It is not simply about feeling peaceful; it is about shifting our awareness. Instead of identifying only with our bodies, roles, achievements, or possessions, we gradually move from an outward-focused consciousness to awareness of our true spiritual identity. This inner shift allows us to experience ourselves as pure beings. From this awareness, we continue to perform our daily responsibilities with greater clarity, compassion, humility, and detachment. We are no longer easily shaken by changing situations, because our stability comes from within. As we become spiritually grounded, our thoughts, words, and actions begin to reflect our true states. We naturally become a source of peace and strength for others.Take a moment to reflect on your own life. How grounded are you physically, mentally, and spiritually? The key is to keep the body active, the mind at rest, and to live life as a divine being playing roles.Courtesy: Rajyoga Meditation Centre, Kingston (meditation courses and counselling are offered free of charge).
