(Kaieteur News) – A former enslaver and colonizer, a former grand imperial power, could stand in defiance of the US. The UK could do that for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba. The formerly enslaved and indentured, a former colony, now an oil power, did not have the courage of its convictions, the decency to vote for or against the US embargo on Cuba. Guyana could not even stand and go on record as putting in a word for Cuba. Guyana found a rock under which to hide its face, and there buried itself. It took the coward’s way out of its predicament: abstained from voting.
It is becoming more apparent that the “special relationship” supposedly existing between Guyana and the US is a product of the imagination of Guyana’s leaders, with President Irfaan Ali in the front row. Whatever he and US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, concocted, it is special for the US only, and only in the interests of the US side of the relationship. If this is a special friendship, then someone in the PPPC Government needs to explain why Guyana is always left with the role of stooge and puppet? A country that is hampered from making its own choices. A polity whose leaders are so crippled by fear of the US that they cannot even stand for a friend. An independent nation that might as well be enslaved, so much it is in the grip of the US, so much it reinforces the image of a pawn. The UK could cast a vote at the UN for the lifting of the US embargo on the distressed peoples of Cuba, but Guyana tucked its tail between its legs and beat a sickening retreat.
