THE State must now fork out more than $3 million to compensate two Diego Martin siblings, Brian and Sasha Seepersad, for breaches to their constitutional rights after they were remanded into adult prison facilities for prolonged periods even though they were both minors at the time.
Brian was just 13 years old while his sister was 15 when they first appeared in court in January 2014 charged with the murder of Dulraj Deodath in Diego Martin earlier the same month. Deodath, an auto mechanic, was bludgeoned to death.
On Tuesday, Justice Margaret Mohammed ordered that $1.23 million in compensatory and vindicatory damages be paid to Sasha and, $1.85 million be paid to Brian’s estate.
