International relations expert Dr Anthony Gonzales said he thinks the US warships are in the Caribbean for the purpose of intercepting drug traffickers. He said a much larger force would be needed for any other purpose.
Speaking to Newsday by phone on August 22, he said,
“Are they going to attack Venezuela or are they going to interrupt drug smugglers and do what the US coast guard usually does, go out into the sea lanes and try to intercept the ships where they suspect they’re carrying drugs? I guess the ships they suspect of crime they will stop and search them.
