The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has reported a notable decline in violent and property crimes so far in 2024, compared to the same period last year.
Acting Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin and Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Curt Simon shared these updates during a press briefing at the Police Administration Building in Port of Spain Tuesday afternoon. Benjamin stated that the murder rate for the year currently stands at 113, compared to 160 for the same period in 2023. Shootings and woundings have decreased from 209 to 145. Robberies have declined from 750 to 475, and motor vehicle thefts have dropped from 375 to 194.
Benjamin attributed the reductions to the efforts of the TTPS and support from other national security agencies. The country was also under a state of emergency for the period.
