Two InÂdeÂpenÂdent SenÂaÂtors have backed GovÂernÂmentâs conÂtroÂverÂsial bid to apÂply a law retroacÂtiveÂly to reÂvoke a prime minÂisÂteÂrÂiÂal penÂsion for StuÂart Young, who held ofÂfice for just 30 days.
Michael SiÂmon de la Bastide, SC, and CourtÂney Mc Nish spoke in supÂport of the Prime MinÂisÂterâs PenÂsions (AmendÂment) Bill, 2025, which would disÂqualÂiÂfy forÂmer prime minÂisÂters from reÂceivÂing penÂsions if they served less than one year and demitÂted ofÂfice afÂter March 10.
Young beÂcame prime minÂisÂter on March 17, 2025, and served unÂtil April 28, when the PeoÂpleâs NaÂtionÂal MoveÂment lost the GenÂerÂal ElecÂtion. UnÂder the curÂrent law, he qualÂiÂfies for a penÂsion of $87,000 a month.
