FORMER minister of national security Marvin Gonzales is questioning whether allegations that the Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge is under threat are part of the reasons for the cancellation of this year’s Independence Day Parade and fireworks show.
Gonzales questioned if this was the real reason for the cancellation of the ceremonies, of if it was another “convenient distraction”. He posted about the issue on his various social media platforms and also spoke with TV6 News on the matter.
“Threats against the life of any public official must be taken seriously. It is the reason why the PNM (People’s National Movement) supported the state of emergency (SoE). We trusted the words of the Police Commissioner (Allister Guevarro). The reports of threats against the Minister of Defence are equally disturbing, and swift action is needed on the part of the security services. That being said, the Government cannot be allowed a free pass. Was this the real reason for cancelling the Independence Day Parade and fireworks or is this another convenient distraction? Minister Wayne Sturge and the Prime Minister (Kamla Persad-Bissessar) are on public record in stating that Wayne Sturge was not interested in being appointed a Minister of Defence. The public must ask why? Did he perceive a conflict of interest in his private practice as a lawyer and the stance he will be expected to take as a public office holder in the Cabinet? Why did the Prime Minister proceed to appoint Wayne Sturge as a Minister in her Cabinet despite his reluctance to be so appointed?” Gonzales asked.
