(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has condemned the remand of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and Police Constable Ryan Greene, accusing the Irfaan Ali administration of using State institutions to silence dissenting voices and calling for the immediate release of both men.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the trade union body also condemned what it described as violations of the constitutional rights of peaceful protesters during confrontations with the police on Thursday and Friday.
Mohamed and Greene were remanded on Friday on charges related to the Cybercrime Act. The GTUC said it was particularly concerned about the decision, noting that, according to Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde, the offences are bailable under the law.
