Even though it inherited a depleted Treasury in April 2025, the UNC Government was able to restore confidence in Trinidad and Tobago’s economy and deliver on its promise of a 10% wage increase for workers, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said.
Speaking at the UNC’s 37th anniversary congress in Couva Saturday, Persad-Bissessar emphasised to supporters that it will take time to repair what she described as ten years of mismanagement and abuse under the former PNM administration.
She said during the PNM’s decade in office, national debt nearly doubled—from $75.4 billion in 2015 to $144.7 billion in 2025—while economic output contracted by 20%, foreign reserves were halved, and billions were withdrawn from national savings.
