Pres. Ali says Guyana won’t be squeezed by Exxon, but admits country shackled to a bad deal

(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali has declared that Guyana will not be remembered as a small state squeezed by corporate interests and powerful nations, even as he acknowledged that the country remains shackled to what he described as a “bad” oil agreement with US supermajor ExxonMobil.

Ali made the remarks during an interview with Al Jazeera in Doha, Qatar, where he was pressed on whether the time had come for Guyana to tear up its controversial 2016 Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) with ExxonMobil and negotiate better terms for the people.

During Ali’s recent visit to the Qatari capital, Doha, he was interviewed by Al Jazeera where he was questioned about Guyana’s oil deal with ExxonMobil and whether the time has come for Guyana to “tear up” the contract and seek “something better for the people” of the country.
