Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, has assured that there will be accountability “wherever the evidence leads”, following the death of 32-year-old labourer, Gavin Douglas while in police custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station on Saturday.
In a video statement issued on Sunday evening, Walrond stressed that any death involving a person in state custody is a serious matter, emphasising that the state has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of anyone detained by the police.
“Any death involving a person in the custody of the state is a serious matter. When someone is taken into police custody, the state assumes a responsibility for that person’s safety and well-being,” the Minister said.
