Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has fired back at Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles, branding her an “expert in interference,” after Beckles publicly questioned the independence of Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro.
During a media briefing yesterday, Beckles raised concerns about the impartiality of the police leadership under Guevarro. She cited three recent developments she believes cast doubt on the CoP’s impartiality: his public endorsement of the proposed stand-your-ground legislation; his reported decision to withdraw security from former prime ministers Dr Keith Rowley and Stuart Young; and his announcement of the State of Emergency before the Government.
