Economist Dr. Vaalmikki Arjoon has warned that Republic Bank Limited’s proposed increase in service fees could disproportionately affect small businesses and low-income consumers while risking public trust in the banking sector.
The bank has since paused the planned increase, which was set to take effect on May 1st, following pushback from customers.
Speaking on Trinidad and Tobago Today on Tuesday, Dr. Arjoon cautioned that the impact of the proposed increases would be felt most by those least able to absorb them.
