The 2026 national budget debate ended before 2 a.m. on Saturday, in what Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo described as “the shortest wind-up ever to a national budget.”
Tancoo criticised the People’s National Movement (PNM) for failing to contribute, saying their members “ducked, ran, and shirked their responsibility.” He added, “The PNM has fallen. They have nothing to say… they have no choice but to acknowledge that this is an excellent budget.”
The abrupt conclusion followed the contribution of Claxton Bay MP Hansen Narinesingh. According to House officials, no opposition members rose to speak when called upon, prompting House Speaker Jadeo Singh to immediately recognise Minister Tancoo to wind up the debate.
