(Kaieteur News) – The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the largest party in the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition, has accused the leadership of the Corriverton Town Council of sidelining elected councillors, neglecting critical municipal services and presiding over serious administrative deficiencies, allegations Mayor Imran Amin has rejected as “totally false”.
In a statement to the media, the party said it was gravely concerned about the deteriorating state of governance, administration and essential municipal services at the Corriverton Town Council. According to information the party claims to have received through its councillor, Anil Sugrim, the Council has reportedly failed to convene meetings for two consecutive months, while its committees have also ceased to function. These developments, the party said, raise concerns about accountability, transparency and the proper discharge of the Council’s statutory responsibilities to the residents and businesses of Corriverton.
“Of even greater concern are reports that elected councillors, including members of the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), are being kept uninformed about the affairs and operations of the Council. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Town Clerk are alleged to be exercising decision-making authority without adequate consultation with the wider Council. If substantiated, such practices would undermine the collective responsibility of elected representatives and the principles of democratic local government. The PNCR/APNU is particularly concerned that the absence of effective oversight appears to be contributing to frustration and disengagement among councillors, including members of the PPP/C itself. Local government must not become the private preserve of a few individuals. The Council exists to serve the people of Corriverton, not the personal or political interests of those entrusted with its administration,” the party added.
