Prime MinÂisÂter KamÂla PerÂsad-BissesÂsar says alÂthough the UnitÂed NaÂtionÂal ConÂgress (UNC) won a 26-seat maÂjorÂiÂty in the April 28 GenÂerÂal ElecÂtion, which gives them a three-fifths maÂjorÂiÂty in the lowÂer house, they will not misÂuse their auÂthorÂiÂty.
“We thank the peoÂple of T&T for givÂing us that maÂjorÂiÂty beÂcause that’s how the law is. We will need that maÂjorÂiÂty from time to time, but I give the asÂsurÂance toÂday that we will not abuse that powÂer that you have givÂen us,” PerÂsad-BissesÂsar said yesÂterÂday as she adÂdressed the gathÂerÂing at the cerÂeÂmoÂniÂal openÂing of 13th ReÂpubÂliÂcan ParÂliaÂment at the Red House, Port-of-Spain.
AcÂknowlÂedgÂing the hisÂtoric moÂment of three poÂlitÂiÂcal parÂties beÂing repÂreÂsentÂed in the LowÂer House for the first time in 25 years, PerÂsad-BissesÂsar said the elecÂtorate did not vote mereÂly for a new govÂernÂment but for long-term strucÂturÂal change, which her adÂminÂisÂtraÂtion inÂtends to deÂlivÂer with the speÂcial maÂjorÂiÂty it now holds.
