BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):In a stunning and abrupt reversal, St Kitts and Nevis has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2027 CARIFTA Games, dashing the hopes of a nation that had eagerly awaited the return of the region’s premier junior athletics championships.After months of public speculation and initial governmental interest, the decision to step aside was confirmed on Wednesday by Minister of Sports Samal Duggins.Following high-level discussions with the St Kitts-Nevis Athletics Association and the St Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee, the administration concluded that next year is simply “not the most ideal time” for the federation to take on the prestigious event.“We believe that along with the different institutions, particularly the Olympic Committee, that next year would not be the most ideal time for us to host it,” Duggins stated. He added that the federation had requested a deferment of its interest to a later, undisclosed date, offering little solace to a local sporting community now grappling with profound disappointment.The withdrawal marks a dramatic end to what was already a turbulent bidding process. During the 2026 Carifta Games in Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago emerged as the sole candidates after no formal bids were submitted ahead of the NACAC Congress.Both nations were subsequently asked to provide robust government or sponsor guarantees, a requirement stiffened by NACAC President Mike Sands to prevent athletics associations from facing major financial shortfalls.Those requirements carried particular weight for St Kitts and Nevis, which previously hosted the Games in 2008 and 2015.The 2015 staging was notoriously followed by financial difficulties, prompting NACAC to demand far stricter safeguards from potential hosts this time around.
