(Kaieteur News) – Guyana is now producing hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil daily, earning billions of US dollars in petroleum revenues and spending millions on the administration and oversight of its oil sector. Yet, when it comes to keeping citizens informed about developments in an industry that is transforming their country, the Government continues to fall short.
The latest revelation of a major oil discovery at Rockhead-1 in the Stabroek Block is another example of this troubling state of affairs. The discovery was not first announced by the Government of Guyana, nor was it disclosed through a formal briefing by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Instead, Guyanese learnt about it through an overseas interview with ExxonMobil’s Vice President and Head of Global Exploration, John Ardill, during the Energy Intelligence Forum 2026 in London.
