Jamaica takes reparations fight to the next level

Jamaica has taken its slavery reparations battle to Buckingham Palace, formally filing a petition asking King Charles to seek legal guidance on the country’s claim against Britain.

Culture Minister Olivia Grange, who led Jamaica’s delegation to Britain, announced the filing today in a post on X, sharing a photograph of herself holding the petition and declaring: “the petition has been filed.”

The filing marks a significant step in Jamaica’s decades-long push for reparations over the transatlantic chattel enslavement of Africans in Jamaica.
