(Kaieteur News) – The capsizing of the M.V. Barima ranks as Guyana’s worst marine tragedy and the second-worst human catastrophe in the nation’s modern history after the Jonestown mass suicide/murder of 1978, in which more than 900 persons lost their lives. With the death toll from this disaster expected to exceed 100 persons, Guyana faces a staggering national tragedy.

The enormity of this disaster places it among the Caribbean’s darkest maritime tragedies. It recalls the 1970 sinking of the M.V. Christena in Dominica, which capsized while operating between Roseau and the northern communities of Portsmouth and Marigot. The Christena encountered rough seas, developed a severe list and sank, resulting in the loss of more than 100 lives. Subsequent examinations pointed to factors including overloading and compromised stability.
