"Stay humble and get the job done."
This was the simple message from Trinidad and Tobago women's football team coach Damian Briggs, looking ahead to his team's crucial Concacaf W Qualifier against El Salvador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on April 17.
The game will kick off at 6 pm, with the gates opening at 5 pm. Regular tickets for the uncovered section are priced at $60, with two-on-one uncovered tickets being priced at $100. Tickets for the covered section are priced at $120.
On April 2, at the SIP on the Ave bar on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, the TT Football Association (TTFA) hosted an event to officially launch the Concacaf W Qualifier. Though a meet and greet with the national women's team players was previously advertised, the players from Briggs' squad weren't present.
The head coach aside, TTFA president Kieron Edwards was in attendance, alongside director of women's football Jinelle James, acting technical director Devin Elcock, and TTFA vice-presidents Osmond Downer and Colin Murray.
Though patrons weren't blessed with the presence of the national footballers, they had the opportunity to win tickets for the El Salvador clash, as well as TTFA national team jersey replicas.
Two weeks away from their must-win encounter with El Salvador, Briggs said his players are buzzing and fully focused as they work towards a result that will take them to the Concacaf W Championship. With just one game left to play in the first round, El Salvador lead group F with six points, with TT second on four points. With reference drawn to the TT men's team's failed Fifa 2026 World Cup qualification bid, Briggs said his players don't feel pressured to pick up the mantle from their male compatriots.
"We were behind the men and we supported the men. Unfortunately, it didn't happen for them. But we're not competing with the men, we're just here to do our job and get out of the group stage and then to the next one," Briggs told reporters.
"That's how it's always been, and we'll always keep it that way. For us, we just want to stay as humble as we can and get the job done...I think the main aim is to keep the players level-headed. We don't want to get too carried away by it being a must-win game. Every game we go into, we go to win basically, and this one is no different."
In their last match away to Honduras on March 4, TT fought out of a 2-0 hole to earn a 2-2 draw thanks to a late penalty from Nikita Gosine. Meanwhile, on March 1, El Salvador hammered Barbados 13-0 to take full control of the group.
Briggs said respect is due, but he is backing his charges to do the business on the field.
"We've got to take every game as it comes and respect every opponent, but not fear them. I don't think we fear anyone. We believe in ourselves, in what we're doing, and in how we want to play.
"We know what's at stake and we just want to remain calm so we can go about and perform to the best of our abilities."
Should TT defeat El Salvador on April 17, they and five other group winners from round one will move on to the Concacaf W Championship and join the pre-seeded teams Canada and the US. The Concacaf W Championship serves as the region's qualifier for the 2027 Fifa Women's World Cup and the LA28 Olympics.
