(Kaieteur News) – The opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), on Friday urged Guyana and the United Kingdom to engage in formal negotiations on reparations.
In a statement, the party said it affirms that freedom is the birthright of every human being and a common goal of humanity. It said its call for reparations from the UK for Guyanese descendants of enslaved Africans rests entirely on the universal principle that every people deserves dignity, justice and the opportunity to overcome the consequences of exploitation.
Explaining that slavery resulted in Africans being forcibly removed from their homelands, separated from their families and subjected to generations of violence and compulsory, unpaid labour, APNU highlighted that their work generated wealth for others while they were denied wages, property, inheritance and the freedom to determine their own futures. The party said the resulting imbalance in wealth and opportunity must be addressed.
