(Kaieteur News) – The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) is calling for a thorough examination of whether the MV Barima was properly surveyed and certified to carry passengers, insisting that the vessel’s compliance with Guyana’s maritime safety laws must be established.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 24th October, 2026, the movement disclosed that Member of Parliament and Attorney-at-Law Amanza O. R. Walton had submitted legal arguments to the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the MV Barima tragedy, seeking clarification on the vessel’s statutory obligations regarding safety certification.
Walton’s submission, made on 23rd October, followed an 22nd October report by the Department of Public Information (DPI) stating that government ferries, including the Barima, “do not require certificates of seaworthiness to operate”, attributing that position to counsel to the Commission.
