Team Jamaica returned to the island recently after copping multiple medals at the July 10 to 16 Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (Jr CASA) Championship at the Tortola Sports Club, Passa Estate in the British Virgin Islands. This year’s medal haul of five, inclusive of one gold, two silver and two bronze, plus two consolation wins, was possibly Jamaica’s best performance at the championship for some time.The number-one seed in the Girls’ Under-19 category, Mehar Trehan, retained her title when she overpowered the number-two seed Milanna Lamontagne of the Cayman Islands in straight sets with scores of 11-1, 11-6, 11-6 to capture Jamaica’s only gold medal. Trehan, who is Jamaica’s junior and senior champion, needed just 27 minutes to take the gold medal.Elle Wilson, who lost her semi-final match to Trehan, returned to the court in the third-place play-off to bag the bronze medal.Trehan was not done yet, teaming up with Wilson to capture the silver medal in the Girls’ Doubles. They defeated Kayee Lowe and Emily Fung-A-Fat of Guyana 11-6, 9-11, 11-9.The four-member girls team of Trehan, Wilson, Marley Price, who won the consolation prize in the Girls Under-15 category, and debutant Julie Pagan, who competed in the Girls Under-11 category, won the girls’ team bronze medal.The island’s fifth medal came from the boys’ side after the number-four seed Ethan Miller outperformed his seeding to reach the final but went down to the number-one seed Jayden George of St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Boys’ Under-17 category, to bag Jamaica’s second silver medal. Scores in the match were 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 in favour of George.Debutant Jonathan Cherian won the consolation prize in the Boys Under-11 category.The other members of the boys’ team were Max Henzell (U17), Judah Tavares-Finson (U17), debutant Ethan Cherian (U15) and Jaden Emery (U13).Guyana retained the country title as well as the girls’ title, while St. Vincent and the Grenadines won the boys’ title for the first time.President of Jamaica Squash Karen Anderson was the team coach on tour, while Julian Morrison, who recently completed the World Squash/Panam Squash Level 2 Coaching Course, was the assistant coach. Anderson was pleased with the performance, saying the future looks bright.
