Captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have pleaded not guilty to the four counts of charges against them laid out in a US indictment released on Saturday moments after he was extracted from his Caracas compound by US forces.
The indictment accuses Maduro, Flores and other Venezuelan officials of being complicit in “Narco-terrorism” and the transportation of drugs and weaponry to the United States. As he appeared in the Federal court moments ago he told Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein that he was innocent, and still president of his country.
According to the New York Times, Maduro informed the judge that he had not seen the indictment before appearing in court and that he did not know his rights. As he held it in his hands, he said it was the first time he had done so and asked that he could read it personally.
