(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) has raised serious concerns over the role of the United States Government and its legal representatives in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohammed, questioning whether Washington is acting independently or doing the bidding of the Guyana Government.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, the GHRA said it was concerned that the legal representation of the United States in the proceedings was being paid for by the Government of Guyana, which, according to the organisation, has a partisan interest in the matter because of the political challenge posed by Mohammed and his We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party to the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
The human rights body also pointed out that the allegations against Mohammed and his father in the extradition proceedings relate to acts allegedly committed in Guyana, rather than the United States.
