The football world reacted with outrage on Sunday after FIFA overturned the automatic suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, clearing the tournament's leading American scorer to play against Belgium in Monday's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash.
The decision came days after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly appealed directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review Balogun's red card, according to reports by the Associated Press.
Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament, was sent off during the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday after video review determined he had stepped on the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemović. The dismissal carried an automatic one-match suspension.
