A lack of upĀdates on sevĀerĀal inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtions inĀto alĀleged comĀplicĀiĀty by seĀnior govĀernĀment ofĀfiĀcials acĀcused of huĀman trafĀfickĀing is listĀed as one of the maĀjor reaĀsons why Trinidad and ToĀbaĀgo does not fulĀly meet the minĀiĀmum stanĀdards for elimĀiĀnatĀing huĀman trafĀfickĀing, acĀcordĀing to the US State DeĀpartĀmentās 2025 TrafĀfickĀing in PerĀsons (TIP) ReĀport.
The reĀport lamentĀed that corĀrupĀtion, weak evĀiĀdence colĀlecĀtion, and witĀness inĀtimĀiĀdaĀtion reĀmain maĀjor barĀriĀers to inĀvesĀtiĀgatĀing and prosĀeĀcutĀing trafĀfickĀers efĀfecĀtiveĀly.
The US State DeĀpartĀment reĀport notĀed that corĀrupĀtion and ofĀfiĀcial comĀplicĀiĀty in trafĀfickĀing crimes reĀmained sigĀnifĀiĀcant conĀcerns, inĀhibitĀing law enĀforceĀment acĀtion and some vicĀtimsā willĀingĀness to parĀticĀiĀpate in triĀals. The Counter TrafĀfickĀing Unit (CTU) auĀditĀed two inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtions, one of which inĀvolved alĀleged ofĀfiĀcial comĀplicĀiĀty at a deĀtenĀtion cenĀtre, but conĀcludĀed that the evĀiĀdence was inĀsufĀfiĀcient for the inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtion to proĀceed; the othĀer inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtion inĀvolved the alĀleged comĀplicĀiĀty of memĀbers of ParĀliaĀment and is onĀgoĀing.
