A High Court judge has ordered the state to pay more than $240,000 in compensation to a customs guard who suffered serious injuries after being forced to undergo physical training while recovering from kidney surgery.
Justice Ricky Rahim ruled in favour of Customs and Excise guard Bisram Chirkoot, who sued the state for negligence.
Chirkoot claimed he was compelled to continue rigorous physical training under threat of losing career opportunities, despite repeatedly informing his supervisors of his medical condition.
