(Kaieteur News) – Three months ago, Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, presented photographic evidence on Facebook of bubbling water above the path of ExxonMobil’s gas pipeline to Wales. He claimed that the pipeline must be ruptured, since there were those bubbles close to it. Two government agencies rejected that claim, there is no gas in the pipeline. If there is no gas, there can be no leak. One would have expected that ExxonMobil would have shared words of reassurance, to give added weight to the words of the two Guyana Government agencies.
Two weeks ago, what was carefully noted as a “finding” concerning the gas pipeline in the vicinity of Crane, West Coast Demerara came to the public’s attention. What is this finding? Is there cause for alarm? The repair works are close to a village where people live, and it would be comforting for them to know what is really happening. The most that ExxonMobil would say is that efforts are in motion to get a full understanding of “the exact nature of the issue” with the pipeline. More than a week has since passed, and that is all that citizens know: ExxonMobil is working to fix whatever is wrong with the pipeline. There is a government that is secretive. Now there is a foreign company, Guyana’s largest outside presence, and it also has become known for its love of secrecy. ExxonMobil has to be the mother of all hypocrites, a pretender without equal, to look at citizens in their faces, and tell them what a reliable partner it is.
