GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has issued one of its strongest condemnations yet following the sinking of the MV Barima, declaring that the tragedy was not simply an accident but a potential consequence of systemic failures that demand a full independent investigation and accountability at every level.

In a statement released Monday, the country’s umbrella labour organization extended condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones, survivors, crew members, and the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU), which represents the vessel’s crew.

“This tragedy demands more than sympathy. It demands accountability,” the GTUC said. “Accidents do not simply happen. They are caused. They are the consequence of decisions made, warnings ignored, standards neglected, and responsibilities abandoned.”
