THESE are hard times, post-Hurricane Melissa.

Those who may have thought sport — that wonderful escape valve — would somehow remain unaffected by the economic downturn will have to think again.

This newspaper’s Friday, August 28 edition tells us that the sponsorship budget for the 2026 schoolboy football season, which begins next week, will be among the smallest “in recent times” at just over $40 million.
