Protesters confront President Ali’s convoy amid stalled salvage, unsigned waivers

(Kaieteur News) – Demonstrators representing families affected by the sinking of the MV Barima confronted President Irfaan Ali’s motorcade on Main Street on Tuesday, demanding immediate action as recovery efforts remain stalled more than ten weeks after the July 18 disaster.

Grieving relatives flocked the roadside along the president’s route toward State House, holding signs and calling on the head-of-state to halt his convoy. However, the presidential motorcade continued past without stopping to engage the crowd, heightening frustration among those seeking answers regarding missing crew members.

The roadside demonstration marks an escalation in public protests surrounding the tragedy. Affected families are calling for, immediate salvaging of the MV Barima. Relatives emphasised that recovery operations are essential to retrieve the remains of missing crew members. Protesters are also demanding the resignations of Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar and Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill over government oversight and handling of the incident.
