(Kaieteur News) – As King Charles III arrives in Guyana amid celebrations of renewed commercial ties between Britain and its former colony, questions are mounting over the fate of a British-backed hospital project that has become embroiled in a multimillion-euro contractual dispute between the Government of Guyana and Austrian healthcare infrastructure provider VAMED Engineering GmbH.
A source close to VAMED has questioned whether the troubled Guyana Paediatric and Maternal Hospital project in Georgetown will feature in discussions between the British monarch and President Irfaan Ali, particularly as Guyana seeks to attract further investment under Britain’s export-financing arrangements.
The source pointed to the contrast between Britain’s commitment to making billions of pounds in export-financing capacity available to Guyana and the difficulties surrounding one of the country’s major projects supported by British export finance. In 2022, President Ali joined British and Austrian representatives at the sod-turning ceremony for the Georgetown hospital, which was expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to provide specialised maternal and paediatric healthcare.
