The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is wrapping up a programme aimed at strengthening Guyana’s Atlantic Seabob shrimp industry, with stakeholders looking to build on the gains and position the country as a leading global exporter.
The FISH4ACP programme, implemented by the FAO in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and other partners, was designed to upgrade the Atlantic Seabob value chain and make it more sustainable, better managed and resilient.
At a legacy event in Georgetown on Thursday, representatives of Government, the private sector, fisherfolk organisations and development partners reviewed the programme’s achievements and discussed how its work could continue beyond its completion. FAO Representative for Guyana, Dr. Gillian Smith, said the programme had advanced efforts to improve the management and sustainability of the shrimp industry, including through better data collection, stock management, food safety and quality, safety at sea and stronger fisheries cooperatives.
