Postal Service to revive Jackie Opel Amphitheatre

The long-underused Jackie Opel Amphitheatre at the General Post Office complex in Cheapside, is to be revitalised into a regular venue for culture, youth performance and community heritage, Postmaster General Joann Busby has announced.

She made the disclosure as the nation marked the 89th anniversary of the birth of the spouge pioneer, who died 56 years ago, aged 32.

“For many years, this amphitheatre has stood largely silent,” Busby said. “Too often, people passed by without stopping, some forgot it was here, and others never knew it existed. Spaces like this are not meant to be monuments of memory alone. They are meant to be living spaces — places where culture breathes, where conversations happen, where artists are discovered, and where communities gather to tell the Barbadian story.”
