Pres­i­dent of the Me­dia In­sti­tute of the Caribbean, Ki­ran Ma­haraj, has been elect­ed to the steer­ing com­mit­tee of the Glob­al Fo­rum for Me­dia De­vel­op­ment. The an­nounce­ment was made on Ju­ly 16 dur­ing an Ex­tra­or­di­nary Gen­er­al As­sem­bly of the GFMD, fol­low­ing an on­line vote by mem­ber or­gan­i­sa­tions.

Ki­ran Ma­haraj will rep­re­sent Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean. Ex­ec­u­tive Sec­re­tary of the Brazil­ian As­so­ci­a­tion of In­ves­tiga­tive Jour­nal­ism, Adri­ana Gar­cia, will al­so serve on the com­mit­tee. They join rep­re­sen­ta­tives from East­ern Eu­rope, the Cau­ca­sus and Cen­tral Asia; North­ern, South­ern and West­ern Eu­rope; the Mid­dle East and North Africa; North Amer­i­ca; and var­i­ous glob­al and pol­i­cy-fo­cused or­gan­i­sa­tions.

The Glob­al Fo­rum for Me­dia De­vel­op­ment is a net­work of 203 me­dia de­vel­op­ment and jour­nal­ism sup­port or­gan­i­sa­tions from 82 coun­tries. It pro­motes col­lab­o­ra­tion, best prac­tices, and sup­port­ive en­vi­ron­ments for in­de­pen­dent me­dia out­lets.
