Trelawny-raised sailor finds purpose in US Navy

Growing up in Trelawny, Jamila Dawkins learnt the importance of community, hard work and looking out for others, values that continue to guide her as she serves in the United States Navy.

Today, the Jamaica-born sailor serves aboard USS The Sullivans, a Navy destroyer operating out of Mayport, Florida.

“Community is big in my hometown,” said Dawkins, a petty officer 3rd class. “Having that foundation taught me the importance of connections and looking out for your neighbours. In the Navy, building relationships with other sailors and having a strong community helps me grow personally and professionally.”
