Ameen: NPUPS may return after 2027 Budget

The Na­tion­al Pro­gramme for the Up­keep of Pub­lic Spaces (NPUPS) will come to an end on Sep­tem­ber 13, with Rur­al De­vel­op­ment and Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Min­is­ter Khadi­jah Ameen say­ing the pro­gramme could re­sume and be ex­pand­ed de­pend­ing on fund­ing al­lo­cat­ed in the 2027 Na­tion­al Bud­get.

Ameen made the dis­clo­sure in the Sen­ate yes­ter­day in re­sponse to ques­tions from In­de­pen­dent Sen­a­tor Dr Mar­lene Attzs about the pro­gramme’s ef­fec­tive­ness and what would hap­pen to the main­te­nance of pub­lic spaces once it ends.

Ameen said NPUPS, which cur­rent­ly em­ploys 1,684 work­ers across Trinidad and To­ba­go, was in­tro­duced fol­low­ing a pi­lot pro­gramme be­tween No­vem­ber and De­cem­ber 2025.
