Swept Track Club head coach Okeile Stewart says he was disappointed that his charge, Javier Brown was not selected to represent the country in the 400 metres at this year’s Commonwealth Games, despite producing a personal-best performance at last month’s National Championships.Brown, 24, finished third in the men’s 400 metres in a new lifetime best of 45.26 seconds at the National Championships. However, he was instead selected to represent Jamaica at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in August.Former world champion Antonio Watson won the event in 44.73, while Delano Kennedy was second in 45.11. Zandrian Barnes, whose season’s best stands at 45.30, was selected alongside Watson and Kennedy for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.Stewart said while he is a bit disappointed with the selection, he remains pleased that Brown will still have another opportunity to compete for Jamaica at the senior level.“Yes, I am disappointed, but I don’t want to go into much details as to why. But we are happy that he is getting another chance to represent the country at the senior level again and to pretty much better himself in this event and get a better time and, hopefully, a medal for Jamaica,” said Stewart. The veteran coach added that Brown has yet to reach his full potential and expects the former Jamaica College standout to continue improving.“He is a very determined athlete, and I would say he is showing a lot more than he can give and I hope that someday, he will show his true potential and represent himself and Jamaica well.”Stewart explained that Brown’s progress over the past two seasons has been interrupted by injuries, but he has praised the athlete’s resilience.“Last year, we had high hopes that he would have gone deep 44, but injuries came in and caused a little derailing in that. He went to the World Relays and he did creditably well,” he said. “He assisted the team in performing well; and this year there are some little niggles just the same, but we were able to overcome and turn up at the National Trials.”He also shared that Brown competed sparingly throughout the season before producing his best performance when it mattered most.“We competed sparingly, but we turned up at the National Trials and we ran a personal best of 45.26 and were able to place in the final. I think he has a lot more to give, but we are trying to work with him and keep him as healthy as possible.”sports@gleanerjm.com
