The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) honoured fathers serving within its ranks as part of its annual Father’s Day observance, recognising their contributions to both military service and family life. The observance at Base Camp Ayanganna was led by Colonel General Staff Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, who acted in the capacity of Chief of Defence Staff on Friday. Addressing fathers from units under the purview of Defence Headquarters, Colonel Roberts commended them for the example they set through their commitment to both family and country. He noted that fathers have a profound influence on the development of their children and the strength of their communities, emphasising that their guidance, support and presence are critical in shaping responsible citizens and future leaders. Colonel Roberts also encouraged the ranks to remain steadfast in the values that define military service. He urged them to continue demonstrating discipline, integrity and professionalism not only in uniform but also within their homes and communities.
The senior officer further highlighted the importance of fathers serving as positive role models, particularly for young people who may be without strong male influences in their lives. Speaking on the impact of fatherhood, Colonel Roberts underscored the connection between strong family structures and national development, stating that “healthy families create healthy communities, which in turn create a healthy country.” As part of the observance, Inspector General Lieutenant Colonel Natasha Stanford-Francis, Colonel Administration and Quartering Commander Roger Nurse, together with senior officers and warrant officers, presented hampers and cash vouchers to fathers as a token of appreciation for their dedication, sacrifice and service. According to the GDF, the activity forms part of the Force’s annual observance of Father’s Day. Similar presentations are being conducted at GDF bases and locations across the country in recognition of the contributions fathers make both to the organisation and to the nation.
The Force said the annual initiative is its continued acknowledgement of the role fathers play in supporting family life while carrying out their responsibilities in national service.
