Once abundant along the island’s shores and in its surrounding waters, Jamaica’s sea turtles now face mounting threats to their survival. From habitat loss caused by coastal development, tourism and beach erosion to poaching and natural predators, these marine creatures face numerous challenges, particularly during the vulnerable nesting and hatching seasons.
In this week’s episode of Fi Wi Land, host Carlysia Ramdeen and National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) Environmental Coordinator Ricardo Miller explore the importance of protecting Jamaica’s sea turtles and the role everyone can play in their conservation.
They discuss what to do when encountering nesting turtles or newly hatched babies, why disturbing nesting sites can have serious consequences, and how simple, responsible actions can give hatchlings a better chance of survival.
