(Kaieteur News) – Emancipation Day is more than the celebration of slavery’s abolition. It is the annual reminder that freedom must be guarded, defended and lived. Freedom is not merely the breaking of chains placed on the wrists of men. It is the breaking of chains placed on the mind, on institutions, on truth, on justice and on opportunity.

A nation cannot claim to be emancipated if its people are afraid to question, afraid to demand answers, or forced to settle for less while sitting atop immeasurable wealth.
