The World Bank Group has appointed Juan Carlos Alvarez as its new Country Manager for Trinidad and Tobago, bringing the institution’s country-level leadership under a single figure as it looks to deepen its development work in the country.
In the newly unified role, Alvarez will oversee the World Bank Group’s full suite of institutions operating in Trinidad and Tobago: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). The appointment is intended to streamline the Bank’s engagement with the country, aligning financing, technical knowledge, and private-sector investment behind shared national priorities, including job creation and support for both public and private sector growth.
Alvarez joined the World Bank Group in 2000 and has built a career spanning legal and operational roles across multiple regions, including Latin America and the Caribbean and South Asia, where he advised Country Management Units on legal, policy, and operational matters. Most recently, he served as World Bank Country Manager for Angola and SĂŁo TomĂ© and PrĂncipe, leading the institution’s engagement with both countries.
