Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies left-arm spinner had a day to remember in the Indian Premier League (IPL) today, as he returned impressive figures of four for 17 in Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) 103-run win over fellow five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Sanju Samson's unbeaten 101 set the stage for CSK, who posted a competitive score of 207 for six. With the ball in hand, it was the turn of the impact sub Hosein, who mesmerized with two wickets in the power play, before returning to get the key scalps of Tilak Varma (37 off 29 balls) and Suryakumar "Sky" Yadav (36 off 30).
The wily finger spinner got the ball rolling in only the first over, as he had Danish Malewar edging behind to Samson off the very first ball he faced. For his next trick, Hosein comprehensively bowled Naman Dhir (duck) as Mumbai slipped to 11 for three by the third over.
Mumbai desperately needed a partnership, and they got it from the pair of Varma and Sky, who put together 73 for the fourth wicket. In the 12th over, though, Hosein put that partnership to bed when Varma dragged one onto his stumps, unable to replicate the century heroics from his team's previous game against Gujarat Titans. Mumbai fell into further trouble in the 13th over, as Noor Ahmad got in on the act with the double-blow of big-hitters Hardik Pandya (one) and Hosein's West Indies teammate Sherfane Rutherford (golden duck).
When Sky was caught at backward square leg off Hosein in the subsequent over, the writing was well and truly on the wall for Mumbai at 87 for seven. They were eventually bowled out for 104 in the 19th over, as they succumbed to their biggest margin of defeat (by runs) in the IPL.
CSK are fifth on the ten-team table with six points, with Mumbai languishing in eighth on just four points.
Summarised Scores:
CSK - 207/6 from 20 overs (Sanju Samson 101 not out, Ruturaj Gaikwad 22, Dewald Brevis 21; Allah Ghazanfar 2/25, Ashwani Kumar 2/37) vs MUMBAI INDIANS - 104 from 19 overs (Tilak Varma 37, Suryakumar Yadav 36; Akeal Hosein 4/17, Noor Ahmad 2/24). CSK won by 103 runs.
